October 4, 2012, is the anniversary of the opening of McLane Children’s Hospital Scott & White. On that day one year ago the first patient was wheeled into the new, dedicated pediatric hospital.
Dr. John L. Boyd III, CEO and chief medical officer, oversaw the build-out of the hospital, and remembers some of the emotions he was feeling when it finally came time to open the doors.

The year for McLane Children’s exceeded expectations. The quick facts are:
- 2,764 patients
- 13,862 Emergency Department visits
- 3,164 surgeries
- 50,167 visitors
- 4,093 donors
- More than $38 million raised by philanthropy
Plans for the immediate future focus on construction of a five-story pediatric multispecialty clinic building adjacent to the hospital. When completed, the building will bring pediatric specialties, sub-specialties and services next door to the hospital, making the campus a convenient center of care for children and families of Central Texas.
